Still Life

Still life as a genre is a powerful and beautiful thing in the hands of those artists willing to extend the possibilities available to this subject. Some still life artists are able to comment on personal revelations, or societal issues or even do a self portrait from the objects that they most admire. It is in many ways, a total reveal of the society in which we live. Some artists perhaps such as William Bailey or Morandi use still life purely for formal aesthetic concerns. So this subject as a genre has multiple potential avenues for exploration.

Some artists of late will use still life as a daily meditation and set up and paint a small composition each day. Denise Lisiecki who has worked nearly her entire career in still life has mastered the art of composing any given still life and has experimented with overlaying these compositions with specific subject related meanings. To her, the still life offers an amazing vehicle for self expression.
